I chose GeneratePress as the foundation, prioritizing performance, bold typography, and a structured, reader-first layout. Along the way, refining the design taught me a few valuable lessons about balancing clean aesthetics with underlying site architecture.

Here is what worked, what tripped me up, and why keeping your layout lightweight is worth the effort.

1. Prioritize Visual Hierarchy and Typography

A clean site layout depends on strong typography and clear spatial organization. Rather than relying on heavy visual borders or cluttered graphic elements, using bold, purposeful typography creates natural emphasis that guides the eye down the page.

  • Readability first: Larger font sizes and clean line heights make long-form reading effortless.

  • Proportional headings: Distinct, bold headers establish a logical visual hierarchy so readers can scan efficiently.

  • Consistent spacing: Giving text room to breathe prevents the layout from feeling crowded, especially on mobile displays.

2. Positioning Navigation for Better User Flow

Header layouts often get overcomplicated. A common design pitfall is squeezing primary navigation links directly beside a large site header or logo, forcing long menus to wrap awkwardly or crowd the brand identity on smaller screens.

Key Design Rule: Let your primary navigation live cleanly directly below your main header banner.

This approach accomplishes two things:
