10 Days Completely Off Grid (And Why Most Business Owners Are Doing It Wrong)
My wife and I just got back from 10 days at an undisclosed, completely off-grid location. No endless pinging, no digital noise, no cheap distractions.
Most people call that a “vacation.” I call it necessary maintenance.
If your business can’t survive you stepping away for 10 days, you don’t own a business—you own a high-stress job.
Sitting by the camper, looking out over the bay, and watching the eagles and osprey, I had time to do two things most people constantly neglect: read without interruption and make ruthless, strategic decisions about the future.
Here are a few raw takeaways from 10 days off the grid:
1. The 2027 Exit Strategy is Locked In
Come December, I officially “retire.” But retirement isn’t about sitting on your hands; it’s about control.
The master plan? Moving out of Abbotsford and relocating straight to the Okanagan—Canada’s desert country. We’ve visited Oliver, BC multiple times over the years, built strong local connections, and decided that’s where we want the sun, the heat, and a vastly superior pace of life.
The strategy is simple and airtight: I’ll focus on high-value local lead generation and a few choice bolt-on services. My wife stays remote with her current company. That gives us complete geographic freedom with predictable income streams. The ultimate win-win.
2. Financial Sovereignty Beats High Income Every Single Time
While staring at the lake, my wife and I broke down a fundamental truth: You need far less to live exceptionally well than the mainstream world wants you to believe.
We’ve been completely debt-free since 2018. When you eliminate debt, you eliminate leverage over your life. Cutting fat isn’t about sacrifice; it’s about efficiency. Ditch bloated cable bills for lean streaming, buy fresh, healthy food local three times a week, and keep overhead dangerously low.
Low overhead equals absolute freedom. High expenses force bad business decisions.
3. What I Read (And Why You Should Too)
If you aren’t feeding your mind top-tier material while off the clock, you’re wasting the downtime. I tackled two books on this trip:
-
Godly Ambition by Ruslan KD: A must-read if you’re looking to align faith, purpose, and a clear tactical game plan for your life.
-
Sell Like Crazy by Sabri Suby: Direct-response, aggressive marketing principles for any entrepreneur looking to cut through the fluff and generate real revenue.
The Bottom Line
Technology has an iron grip on the average professional today, draining their energy and clouding their focus.
Take the time away. Disconnect the wire. Re-evaluate your overhead, map out your exit plan, and take total control of where you’re heading. If you don’t design your life, someone else will gladly design it for you.
